Another historical connection lies in the town’s name. Valdemārpils was named in honour of Krišjānis Valdemārs, who studied and worked as a teacher there from 1835 to 1845. The former synagogue at 1 Ezera iela is also part of the town’s history; it was built around 1830. In the 19th century, the Sasmaka synagogue complex comprised a synagogue, a ritual slaughterhouse, a ritual bath and the rabbi’s residence.
A Jewish cemetery is located on Dzirnavkalns as a memorial site with gravestones for Valdemārpils’s former Jewish community. Burials took place there until 1940. Dzirnavkalns itself was named after a mill that stood there until 1960. The upper floors of the mill once offered a view towards Sasmaka Lake.

In the park at the end of Liepu iela, the Sasmakas Elku lime tree stands in front of the former Sasmaka manor house. The tree is therefore not only a natural attraction but is also connected with a historical site.
