Geographical Location

Kapčiamiestis is a small town in the Lazdijai District Municipality in the southern Lithuanian region of Dzūkija, near the borders with Poland and Belarus.

Nature

Kapčiamiestis is situated in a wooded area on the banks of the Baltoji Ančia River (White Ančia).

History and Culture

In the 19th century, Kapčiamiestis developed into a regional market town because of its location along important roads to Suwałki and Grodno.

The grave of the Polish-Lithuanian countess and freedom fighter Emilia Plater (Emilija Pliaterytė, 1806–1831) is located in Kapčiamiestis.

The Kapčiamiestis archaeological settlement (Pinčiaragis) next to the Baltoji Ančia River dates from the end of the Late Paleolithic, around the 10th millennium BC, and is attributed to the Late Swiderian cultural tradition.

The settlement is described as the oldest studied Stone Age settlement on the southern edge of Užnemunė.
