Jeleniewo’s 18th-century town layout is arranged around a square market square. Today the square is a park, with streets leading away from its corners. The shape of the square and the street layout go together, offering a tangible insight into the historic plan: the layout consists not only of individual buildings but also of the arrangement around the market.

The present-day wooden church in Jeleniewo was built in 1878 and stands beside the market square. A historic wooden bell tower stands directly next to the church. In the Suwałki region, the church is considered the only monument of its class of sacred wooden architecture. It thus connects the townscape around the market with a distinctly regional significance.

Movable historic objects are also part of its story. In 2013, a positive organ made after 1878 and three winged angels were added to the register of monuments. The angels had been found in the church attic. A colony of the rare pond bat also lives there. Its presence may change over time.

Nearby, the Izba Pamięci Jaćwieskiej in Szurpiły documents the history of Jaćwież, particularly the everyday life and struggles of the most powerful of the Prussian tribes. A model beneath a glass floor shows part of Góra Zamkowa and the surrounding lakes, depicting an attack by the Rus on the Yotvingians.

Replicas of archaeological finds from Szurpiły and the surrounding area on display include brooches, pendants and rings, as well as a necklace of the “death crown” type, everyday objects and clay vessels. Weapons and equipment used by warriors are also represented. The exhibition thus focuses both on a depicted historical scene and on different types of finds.

The “Tropem Sziurpy” tourist trail starts at the Izba Pamięci Jaćwieskiej. Eight themed information boards along the trail cover local history and the people who inhabited the Suwałki region in the early Middle Ages. The trail is 3.2 kilometres long; this distance is for one direction.
