Suwalski at a glance

Suwalski Landscape Park is home to both the park’s longest hiking trail and a shorter educational trail through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. At Lake Wigry, you can take trips aboard the “Tryton” ship, and from May to October there is an educational water trail by boat on LEPTODORA II. Those interested in culture will find, among other things, the Muzeum Wigier and a historic Old Believer molenna in Wodziłki.

Activities range from hiking and cycling to winter pursuits and experiences for children. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering whether you would like to focus on trails and landscapes, culture, family activities or winter sports.

Which hiking trails and landscapes define the destination?

The blue “Znad Szelmentu przez Park Krajobrazowy” hiking trail is 21 kilometres long, making it the longest hiking trail in Suwalski Landscape Park. For a shorter route, consider the six-kilometre “U źródeł Szeszupy” educational trail. It runs from Szeszupka to Łopuchowo through the park’s landscape shaped by the Ice Age. People with specific mobility needs can visit the entire trail by car.

Individual landforms also give the area its distinctive character: at 256.4 metres, Góra Cisowa is an example of a terminal moraine. It is also called Sypana and Gulbineska; because of its shape, it is also known as “Suwalska Fudżijama.” The “Głazowisko Bachanowo nad Czarną Hańczą” nature reserve covers less than one hectare and contains around 10,000 erratic boulders. They range in circumference from half a metre to eight metres, offering an unusual glimpse of a landscape shaped by glaciers.

For a cycling trip, the “Wokół rynnowego jeziora Hańcza” route runs through Suwalski Landscape Park and around the ribbon lake Hańcza. A route around Lake Hańcza passes through the holiday village of Błaskowizna and by a beach there with a pier and information boards.

What does Suwalski offer those interested in culture?

You can visit the Muzeum Wigier independently, with an audio guide or as part of a guided tour. Educational activities are held there on weekdays throughout the year. This means you can tailor your museum visit to your interests, choosing either to explore independently or to take part in one of the available activities.

At the Camaldolese Monastery of Wigry, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary serves the local parish and numerous visitors. Its present condition dates back to its reconstruction after wartime damage, which began in 1947. Wodziłki is also home to a historic wooden Old Believer prayer house, known as a molenna. Inside are several icons, old books and crosses.

What water-based and family experiences are available?

At the foot of the Wigry Monastery is a landing stage for the “Tryton” ship, which makes regular trips on Lake Wigry. From May to October, the lake also has an educational water trail served by the LEPTODORA II boat. Wigry National Park uses a motorboat with a glass bottom for this purpose.

The “Opowieści Turtula” educational trail is for families with children and anyone who wants to follow animal tracks; along the way, it leads, among other places, to a maze with animal sculptures. In Rutka-Tartak, the “Dolina Przygód nad Szeszupą” offers children recreation, play and learning about the animals that live in the Suwałki region. In winter, the Wojewódzki Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji “Szelment” offers a snow-covered ski slope with runs 300 and 400 metres long.
