Święta Lipka is considered an exceptionally high-quality Baroque sacred complex and the oldest Marian cult center in northern Poland. Its designation as a Historical Monument applies to the pilgrimage sanctuary. The church, cloisters and monastery are the named components of the complex; the church has held the title of Basilica minor since Pope John Paul II’s decree of February 24, 1983. Those interested in religious history and sacred architecture will find several clearly identifiable features in one place: the church, the cloisters surrounding it and the monastery.

The Rosary Chapel complex follows the pilgrimage route from Reszel to Święta Lipka and comprises 15 chapels. Their niches contain reliefs depicting the mysteries of the Rosary. The construction is also worth a closer look: the chapels are built of brick and plastered. Most have gable roofs, while three have hipped roofs. The route thus brings together religious imagery and discernible architectural differences, with the chapels not all having the same design.

The last section of the pilgrimage route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest. This is relevant to your planning: if you include the route, expect a forest section on an unpaved surface. A star pilgrimage called “Gwiaździsta” sets out for Święta Lipka from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko and nearby parishes. This makes the site a destination for a pilgrimage with starting points in several places.

The Świętolipskie Museum has seven exhibition rooms, six permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions. One exhibition is devoted to the history of the Shrine of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. The museum also displays part of Saint John Paul II’s personal library: about 1,000 books and albums that were brought from Rome to Święta Lipka after his death. The approximate number and provenance give this part of the collection its own biographical connection, while the exhibition on the shrine’s history focuses on the place itself.

Visitors can hear the sound of the Baroque organ and see its moving elements every day in Święta Lipka. Organ performances take place at set times: Sundays and public holidays at 10:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.; Saturdays at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; weekdays at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Some times differ for groups of more than 20 people, in some cases by prior arrangement. The Świętolipskie Music Evenings have been held during the summer holidays since 1989, on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. in the basilica. The Świętolipskie Music Evenings are an annual music event.
