Dobra – Town History, Half-Timbered Houses and Nature

The townscape is characterised by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Historic attractions include St Clare’s Church and the castle ruins of the von Devitz family. The four-kilometre-long Szlak Olbrzymów starts at the market square. The area around Dobra also offers peninsulas, bodies of water and landscapes that complement its cultural and historical attractions.

The preserved medieval town layout provides Dobra with its historic setting. The half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries add their own architectural character: their wooden elements are designed in the Biedermeier and Art Nouveau styles. St Clare’s Church stands in the north-western part of the town. Designed in the late Gothic style, it is a three-aisled, four-bay hall; its tower is neo-Gothic. This combination makes the church a striking example of the different architectural elements to be seen in Dobra. The castle ruins of the von Devitz family are also among the town’s most important historic attractions. They offer another distinctive point of interest for exploring the town’s history.

The Taber guesthouse is considered the oldest building in Dobra still in use. It is located on the market square, on Kościuszki Street. The market square is also the starting point of the Szlak Olbrzymów.

The Szlak Olbrzymów is four kilometres long and combines natural and historical themes. In the area around Dobra, the Czapla Szyja Peninsula is the trail’s main attraction. Remains of a pile-dwelling settlement from the 6th century were found there. Grodzisko Żurawi Ostrów is another important point along the route, located on the peninsula.

The landscape’s history is also evident in a structure that stood there in the Middle Ages: a 170-metre-long pile bridge connected the Czapla Szyja Peninsula with a hill on the opposite bank. The exposed wooden structures are currently being examined archaeologically.

North of Dobra, the Szlak Olbrzymów passes through the valley of the Dobrzenica River. Meadows and forests cover the valley slopes, and habitats for waterbirds and notable old trees can be found along the trail. The area around Dobra thus brings together cultural and historical sites, landscapes and wildlife habitats.

Leśne Lake is a 1.7-hectare viewpoint on the Szlak Olbrzymów and also a refuge for wetland birds. The town lake and town beach of Dobra are 700 metres from the town. Facilities there include a volleyball court, a beach soccer pitch and a brick-built fire pit. These options differ from the trail’s historical attractions and appeal to travellers who would also like to plan water-based activities during their stay.
