Großschlatten: History, Landscapes and Transapuseana
Großschlatten provides access to Abrud’s history and the surrounding landscape.
Culture and History
Abrud has deep roots in the history of gold mining and is connected with the culture of the Moți. The town is also part of the National Unity Route 1848–1918–1922. This route passes through Abrud and includes historic sights relevant to the historical moments mentioned. Numerous museum collections, commemorative sites and public monuments make it easier for visitors to access the history of the historical processes addressed.
The historic addresses include Casa lui Ioan Buteanu in Abrud. The house is associated with one of Avram Iancu’s closest collaborators. Casa memorială Alexandru Ciura is the childhood home of the writer Alexandru Ciura (1876–1936). Casa tribunului Ioan Șuluțiu housed the Wallachian revolutionaries A. Golescu and B. Iscovescu.
The historical connections can be distinguished according to their focus: some addresses refer to individuals, another to literature, and the route places sights within the historical moments mentioned. This creates not a uniform collection of monuments, but a series of different historical approaches that preserve various names and connections within Abrud.
An older trace is marked by the Roman fortress of Cetățeaua in Abrud. It dates from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. On its northwestern side, the earthworks and defensive ditch are still visible.
Landscape and Religious Buildings
Peştera Lucia cave and the mountains Dealul Coltoului, Muntele Vulcan and Dealul Dâmbului are located in the area surrounding Abrud; the historic addresses and the Roman fortress are situated in the town.
The religious buildings in the same area include Biserica Sohodol church, the Orthodox Church Biserica Ortodoxă Izvorul Tămăduirii, the Roman Catholic Church Biserica Romano-Catolică Câmpeni and Biserica Valea Bistrii church. The churches have different names and stand alongside the cave, mountains and town history as distinct topics.
The forms of the destinations in the surrounding area vary considerably. PeÅŸtera Lucia is a cave alongside the three mountains mentioned; the churches add further religious buildings, each with its own name. For classifying the locations, the distinction between the types is therefore especially important, rather than a shared designation for all the destinations.
Road Route
The approximately 78-kilometre-long Transapuseana connects Aiud with the Bucium–Abrud area. It is paved and accessible to all types of vehicles.
As a road route, the Transapuseana differs from the individually named destinations in the town and its surroundings; different forms of exploring the area therefore exist side by side.
