The various tunnels of the Roman gold-mining complex of Roșia Montană are 7 kilometers long in total. The mining landscape is situated in an agro-pastoral landscape that largely reflects the structures of the communities that supported mining between the 18th and early 20th centuries. Roșia Montană also includes the Tăuri, artificial lakes created for gold mining.

Culture

The third layer of frescoes inside Râmeț Monastery was painted in 1377 by Mihu from Crișul Alb. Râmeț Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements in Transylvania.

At the Sala Unirii in Alba Iulia, the 1,228 delegates of the Great National Assembly gathered on December 1, 1918, and voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania. Visitors to the Sala Unirii can see the delegates’ identity cards, flags, medals, the camera used on December 1, 1918, and other artifacts related to the union.

Nature

Ghețarul de la Vârtop Cave is a karst cave in the Apuseni Mountains with an underground glacier that exists year-round and more than 300 meters of galleries. Cheile Râmețului lies in the Trascău Mountains between steep limestone walls shaped by water and wind.

The “Natura în culori” nature trail is located in the Scărița-Belioara nature reserve on the Șesul Craiului limestone plateau. Cheile Râmețului is a complex nature reserve with hiking trails through impressive limestone formations and along waterways.

The wider regional surroundings of Alba also include Dealul Pleşilor Mountain, Dealul Draşovului Hill, Dealul Bozului Hill, and Dealul Ungureiului Hill.

Trails

The Circuitul Tăurilor is an easy marked hiking trail that begins in the central square of Roșia Montană. Possible activities in Cheile Râmețului include climbing, trekking, and mountaineering.

Hiking, climbing, photography, and picnicking are possible in Cheile Ampoiței. The Scărița-Belioara nature trail can be reached via Muntele-Băișoara, Poșaga, or Ocoliș.

Ghețarul de la Vârtop Cave can be reached on foot from Casa de Piatră in the municipality of Arieșeni, Alba County, in approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Regional cuisine

Punct gastronomic local Micești offers meat products, sausages, and smoked foods, as well as preserves, syrups, zacuscă, pickled vegetables, and cheese. Traditional Romanian dishes are prepared there according to recipes passed down through generations.

At Carmangeria Fraţii Suciu in Săsciori, visitors can try Virșli de Sasciori, a regional product made according to an authentic recipe.
