Culture

The citadel of Aiud dates from the 13th to the 17th century. It includes a fortified complex with eight bastions. Those who explore historic sites through their period and architectural form can consider both aspects separately: the time span places the site in its historical context, while the bastions make its fortification structure tangible.

In the city park on Chapel Hill, the Monumentul Studenților was erected in memory of the students of Colegiului Național ā€žBethlen Gaborā€œ who fell in the fighting against the Habsburg armies in 1704. The Monumentul Studenților takes the form of a stone baldachin; its dome is supported by four slender columns. It is considered Aiud’s oldest public monument.

For a day of sightseeing, the citadel and monument can be considered as distinct cultural areas without conflating their respective historical references. In this way, military architecture and commemorative culture stand side by side in Aiud as independent themes, while the respective dates make a chronological classification possible.

Sacred Buildings

The Biserica Evanghelică-Lutherană dates from the late 19th century and belongs to the Lutheran denomination. It was built on the site of a Romantic chapel from the first half of the 14th century. At the same time, it forms part of the architectural ensemble of Aiud’s citadel.

At this church, denominational affiliation, historical layering and architectural integration exist side by side. The individual aspects can be classified separately when viewing the site, yet they still form a coherent picture of the place.

The Catedrala Sfinții Trei Ierarhi is an Orthodox cathedral whose construction was inspired by the Byzantine design of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It is located near Aiud’s city centre, southeast of Aiud’s citadel. In the case of sacred buildings, you can read architectural models and local setting as two different levels of consideration.

Aiud is therefore home to a Lutheran church within the citadel ensemble and an Orthodox cathedral with a Byzantine model. The Biserica Evanghelică-Lutherană also leads back to a chapel from the 14th century, while the Catedrala Sfinții Trei Ierarhi is spatially classified differently through its location southeast of the citadel and near the city centre.

Wine

The Aiud area has had a winegrowing tradition for centuries. The Aiud wine-growing region is one of the four renowned wine-growing regions of Alba County and part of the tourist route ā€œDrumul Vinuluiā€.

The Aiud-Ciumbrud wine-growing region is one of the few areas in Romania with a controlled designation of origin. For personal selection, regional classification, designation of origin and tasting can be considered as distinct wine-related interests alongside one another.

The wine cellars of Aiud invite visitors to taste the variety of wines produced in Aiud.

For a trip to Strassburg Am Mieresch, a hotel can provide the practical framework, while the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages determine the factual comparison. This information can be considered separately from the city’s cultural and wine-related topics.
