Stremț: Ruins, Cultural Route and Regional Festivals
Stremț brings together the ruins of Diodului Fortress, an archaeological site, the Drumul Icoanei cultural route, Lake Stremț and events in several villages of the municipality. Here, a medieval complex, the history of Roman settlement, regional everyday culture, a lake and two different festival formats stand side by side.
What history can be found in Stremț?
Diodului Fortress is a ruin dating from the 13th to the 16th century. Its components include a castle, a chapel, towers and a ring wall. The rectangular shape of the medieval complex is considered unusual in the military architecture of Transylvania. The ruin thus combines different structural elements with an unusual rectangular ground plan.
The archaeological site of Stremț also includes a settlement from the Roman period. Archaeological finds in the area around Stremț document successive cultures since the Neolithic, including the Starčevo-Criș, Coțofeni and Wietenberg cultures. The historical arc in the area around Stremț extends from the Neolithic through the Roman period to the medieval complex of Diodului Fortress.
