Șiria: Castle, Monastery and Wine Route

In Șiria, the 13th-century Cetatea Șiriei rises on the 496 m-high Dealul Cetății above the Drumul Vinului and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Culture

The historic Bohus Castle houses the Muzeul Memorial „Ioan Slavici și Emil Monția“, a building constructed in the Baroque style in 1838. The museum is closed for renovation work. The permanent exhibition about Ioan Slavici at the Muzeul Memorial „Ioan Slavici și Emil Monția“ comprises three rooms with family photographs, diplomas, awards, decorations, manuscripts, books and newspapers. In 2025, the municipality's staff supported the operation and administration of the Muzeul Satului in Șiria.

The Șiria sculpture ensemble depicts several personalities from the locality as well as significant figures from Romanian culture. At its centre is the statue of Baroness Bohus Szogyeny Antonia, created in 1910.

History

The Feredeu monastery complex in the municipality of Șiria comprises a monastery in the valley and a hermitage on the western slope of the Zărand Mountains. The hermitage dates from the 18th century, lies below the Izvorul Rece summit and is situated at an elevation of 427 metres. It can be reached either via the modernised road leading up the steep slope of the Zărand Mountains or via a tourist trail marked in yellow.

Events

The events calendar includes several dated formats. Festivalul Iei took place on 24 June 2024 at Cetatea Șiriei. In 2025, Festivalul Emil Monția was held for the fifth time as part of the cultural programme of the municipality of Șiria. Zilele Șiriei took place for the 18th time in 2025. The Christmas market on Sfânta-Maria Square in Șiria was held for the fourth time in 2025.

Trails

The Șiria Winter Trail is a sporting competition for amateurs and professionals and uses tourist trails in the Zărand Mountains in the localities of Șoimoș and Șiria. It includes races of 6 km, 15 km and 24 km. The 15 km route follows marked tourist trails from Șiria towards Șaua Cazan, to Feredeu Monastery, to Monumentul Turistului and back to Șiria. The three distances make it easier to compare different route lengths directly.

Șiria can be reached via county road DJ709 or by daily public transport from Arad. The Păuliș–Ghioroc–Covăsânț–Șiria route is one of the one-day tourist routes in Arad County. The wine-growing region of the Arad Wine Route stretches from Lipova to Ineu via Păuliș, Ghioroc, Covăsânț, Șiria and Pâncota.
