Stâlpeni – Terraced Landscapes, Churches and Historic Houses

Stâlpeni lies in the hilly zone of the Getic Plateau south of the Muscele. Its valley area has four terraces. It is bounded by Dealul Mare to the east and Gruiul Stâlpenilor to the west. The landscape lies in the transition zone of the oak-beech forest belt at an elevation of 300 to 500 metres.

Landscape

These features give the geographical setting several clearly distinguishable levels: the hilly location, the terraced valley area, the two bordering elevations and the elevation range. For orientation, these landforms can be considered separately without combining them into a single terrain description.

Nature

The terraces are cut through by intermittent ravine valleys. These include Valea Bârzii, Valea Tiții, Valea Ogrezelii, Valea Cămianului, Valea Lupului and Valea Tânjală. Native wild fauna includes squirrels, hares, roe deer, badgers and martens. Common bird species include larks, finches, woodpeckers, blackbirds, tits, sparrows, jays and magpies.

Geographical Setting

The municipality of Stâlpeni lies on the banks of the Râul Târgului. National road DN73, which connects Pitești with Brașov, passes through Stâlpeni. The Golești–Câmpulung–Parc Kretulescu railway line also runs through the locality; it is served by Stâlpeni station.

History and Culture

The historical record begins with a Hrisov issued by Prince Pătrașcu cel Bun: dated 20 July 1556, the document is the first evidence of the name Stâlpeni.

The municipality's tourist attractions include the “Sfântul Gheorghe” Church in the village of Rădești, which dates from 1774. The old church stands on a hill beside the historic cemetery. In Livezeni, the “Sfântul Nicolae” Church is also a tourist attraction of the municipality; it dates from 1813. The “Nașterea Maicii Domnului” Church in the same village is dated to 1894–1896.

In the village of Stâlpeni, the church dating from 1833 is one of the municipality's tourist attractions. Casa Vasile Niculescu in Stâlpeni dates from 1920, while Casa Marin Diaconescu in Stâlpeni dates back to 1888. The historic Casa Marin Diaconescu house from Stâlpeni was relocated to the Muzeul Viticulturii și Pomiculturii Golești.

The different scales—from the elevation range and individual ravine valleys to villages and buildings—help you consider the landscape, transport and culture separately. The place names and years can be read as independent reference points for planning your own day.

Traditions

A festival is also connected with the local church and community history: during the Feast of Saint George, religious services and folk traditions took place in the municipality of Stâlpeni, while the church in Rădești celebrated its patronal feast.
