Geographical location

The northern part of Argeș County belongs to the Făgăraș Massif of the Southern Carpathians. Moldoveanu reaches 2,544 metres and is the highest peak in the Romanian Carpathians.

Culture and history

Mănăstirea Curtea de Argeș was founded under Neagoe Basarab and consecrated in 1517. Its complex includes a monumental church building, the Agheasmatarul, the Palatul Episcopal and a ten-hectare French-style park.

Muzeul Golești was founded in 1939 to preserve and promote the heritage and historical memory of the Golești family. The open-air section displays more than 30 traditional households from Romania’s main wine-growing and fruit-growing regions.

Conacul Golești was built in 1640 and served as the Golești family’s residence for centuries. The exhibition at Conacul Golești reconstructs the way of life of the Golești boyar family from the late 18th to the early 20th century.

The planetarium of Muzeul Județean Argeș opened in 2008 as Romania’s first digital educational planetarium.

Casa Memorială George Topîrceanu in Nămăiești houses a permanent commemorative exhibition featuring parts of the poet’s personal library, letters, manuscripts and photographs.

Mausoleul Eroilor de la Mateiaș has two exhibition halls covering Romania’s role in the First World War and the fighting in the region in autumn 1916; a diorama is also on display there.

Muzeul Municipal Curtea de Argeș opened in 1969 and has more than 14,000 museum objects arranged in seven rooms according to different periods of the city’s history.

VieroÅŸi Monastery is located in the vicinity of ArgeÅŸ.

The wider regional surroundings of Argeş include Biserica Hinţeşti, Biserica Cuvioasa Parascheva and Biserica Cimitir Moşoaia.

Landscape

Lacul Călțun is a glacial lake at an altitude of 2,135 metres in the Făgăraș Mountains, northeast of Vârful Negoiu, halfway between Cabana Negoiu and Cabana Bâlea Lac, in the Călțun cirque and at the foot of Vârful Călțun.

Peștera Dâmbovicioara is easily accessible to tourists, lies near the road through Cheile Dâmbovicioarei and has a branched gallery more than 250 metres long with a gently ascending course.

Cheile Dâmbovicioarei form a gorge approximately two kilometres long, with vertical walls more than 200 metres high.

Dealul Purcăreni hill is located in the immediate vicinity of Argeş. The wider regional surroundings of Argeş also include Dealul Mihăeştilor hill, Dealul Ştefăneşti hill and Dealul Viilor hill.

Routes and trails

The Transfăgărășan reaches an altitude of 2,034 metres and includes 27 viaducts. It connects the historic provinces of Muntenia and Transylvania.

A drive along the Transfăgărășan combines numerous hairpin bends with mountain scenery.

Valea lui Stan is a narrow canyon with high rock walls in a wild landscape. The Valea lui Stan circular trail is marked with a red dot, rated as difficult and takes four to five hours. The Valea lui Stan trail begins at the Transfăgărășan, approximately three kilometres upstream from Cetatea Poienari and two kilometres downstream from the Vidraru Reservoir.
