Geographical setting

The confluence of the Siret and Bistrița rivers lies within the territory of Comuna Nicolae Bălcescu. The Valea Seacă stream generally flows towards this confluence. The western boundary of the commune is marked by the Culmea Pietricica mountain range, while the Cărunta peak reaches an elevation of 716 metres in the southwest. The landscape includes both a steppe-forest zone and a forest zone with a mixture of oak and beech trees.

Culture

The Preasfânta Inimă a lui Isus Church in Nicolae Bălcescu was consecrated in 1978; its tower is 52 metres high. In the Buchila cemetery, a wooden church preserves two memorial plaques commemorating local people who fell in the First World War.

Musical and dance folklore forms part of the ethnographic heritage of Comuna Nicolae Bălcescu. Local folk singing and dancing are practised at weddings and during performances by groups dedicated to preserving traditions. Traditional crafts continue to be practised and kept alive by many people. The commune identifies Valea Seacă as the oldest village in Comuna Nicolae Bălcescu.

Chapels and trails

The Chapel of the Holy Emperors Constantine and Elena in Buchila was founded in 1888 and can be reached on foot from Buchila or Valea Seacă.

The Înălțarea lui Isus la Cer Chapel stands on Albeni Hill between Valea Seacă and Bălțata. It was built in the 19th century, although the exact date is unknown, and was erected in honour of heroes. From Valea Seacă, the chapel can be reached via an unpaved road; from the foot of the hill, a walking path of approximately 500 metres continues onward.

The Traseu Capele Sud trail has a moderate difficulty level and begins at the foot of Albeni Hill near Valea Seacă. An alternative starting option from Bălțata adds approximately 3 kilometres in length and about 210 metres of elevation gain. Traseu 6 Capele is a 25-kilometre pilgrimage route. Traseu Pelerinaj 7 Capele consists of a thematic high-altitude trail and seven rural routes; five of them connect with the Camino de Romania pilgrimage route.
