Itești between history, rivers and landscapes

Itești has been documented since 19 April 1599. In addition to the prehistoric settlement, the locality’s history includes the archaeological site “Aşezarea de epoca bronzului de la Iteşti – Parcela I şi Parcela II”, a Late Bronze Age settlement of the Noua culture. The place name Itești is derived from the boyar Iteșteanu. Thus, a documented written history of the locality, a prehistoric settlement and a traditional explanation of the name come together in Itești.

In the centre of Itești stands the monument “Monument al eroilor căzuţi în Primul Război Mondial”, a statue. It depicts a Romanian soldier attacking with a weapon. The inscription “PE AICEA NU SE TRECE. MĂRĂȘEȘTI” appears on the monument’s capital. An inscription on the capital supplements the figurative depiction with a separate textual element of the monument.

The parish church of Itești is dedicated to the “Sf. Voievozi Mihail și Gavriil”; its documented history begins in 1837. It was painted by Vasile Popescu, a son of the village. Another religious site, the Schitul Sfinții Părinți Ioachim și Ana in Itești, is a monastic skete. The parish church and the monastic skete therefore represent two different religious institutions within Itești. The Bistrița floodplain and its terraces are among the distinctive landscape features of the municipality of Itești; the terrain has only slight gradients. The municipality includes both plains and hilly country. Arable land and fruit-tree plantations shape the landscape. Terrain forms and gradients are among the variables to consider when planning a day outdoors. Slight gradients and changing terrain forms are therefore just as much part of the landscape as the agricultural areas and fruit cultivation.

The municipality of Itești lies between the Siret and Bistrița rivers. The locality of Itești is part of the 262-hectare Lacul Lilieci Special Protection Area for birds. The Lac Lilieci Special Protection Area for birds covers the water surface of the Lilieci Reservoir on the Şiret River and extends across the municipalities of Bereşti-Bistriţa and Hemeiuşi. The protected landscape therefore includes both the reservoir’s water surface and an area extending across several municipalities.

The municipality of Itești’s most important road connection leads east via the DN2. There is no exit to the west because of the Bistrița River reservoir area. The Bacău–Roman railway line and the DN2 (E85) national road also run through the eastern part of the municipality. There is a CFR railway station and road transport stops there.
