Solonț: Churches, Landscape and Customs at the Foot of the Goșman Mountains

Solonț, Sarata and Cucuieți lie at the foot of the Goșman Mountains in a varied landscape with wooded elevations, hills rich in pasture, plains and numerous streams. The Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril Orthodox Church in Solonț was renovated and structurally consolidated several times after earthquake damage.

The Sfinții Voievozi wooden church in Cucuieți, near Solonț, is dated to 1749 in historical documents; it is considered a historic monument and is designated as such. On its northern side are carved wooden corbels depicting the encounter of stylized ram and wolf heads. Near Solonț is the Sihăstria Crucii Hermitage in Cucuieți, five kilometers north of Solonț along the upper course of the Cucuieți stream. The church of the Sihăstria Crucii Hermitage is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and was built between 2000 and 2007.

Landscape and Water

The Solonț stream rises in the wooded Zemeș Massif, flows eastward through the villages of Solonț and Sarata, and flows into the Tazlăul Mare in the territory of the Pîrjol commune. Customs and Cuisine

The 16th edition of the Nedeia de la Pădurăreni Festival was held in Pădurăreni, in Solonț commune. Songs, dances and traditional costumes were presented at Nedeia de la Pădurăreni. The Capra dance from Sărata includes depictions or motifs of birth, marriage and death.

Local Easter customs include red eggs, sheep's cheese, salad with spring onions and radishes, drob, roast lamb and pasca filled with cheese or sour cream, more recently also with chocolate. At New Year, young people in SolonÈ› commune perform the Capra dance; the first dance takes place at the town hall, after which the group goes to the residents' homes.
