Mărașu – Nature Park, Lakes and Local Culture

Mărașu can be viewed through nature, waterways and local culture on several levels. Balta Mică a Brăilei Nature Park is a protected wetland of international importance, classified as Category V; under the Ramsar Convention, it has been protected since 15 June 2001.

Nature and Bodies of Water

The Brațul Măcin protected area is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) that extends across the administrative territory of Mărașu. It comprises eight natural habitats.

Lake Blasova lies in the central-eastern part of Insula Mare a Brăilei, near the village of Mărașu, and covers approximately 250–300 hectares. Its area varies depending on the Danube's water level.

Lake Zăton is located near Mărașu and Băndoiu. The lake and its surroundings have abundant aquatic vegetation, provide conditions for fish reproduction and offer shelter to migratory birds.

Access and Routes

Balta Mică a Brăilei Nature Park can be accessed exclusively by water, by crossing one of the Danube's channels by boat.

D.J. 212A connects Mărașu with the crossing from the dyke towards Brăila. On D.J. 212A, 43 km are paved; the remaining section is gravel.

Culture

The Church of the “Sfinţii Împăraţi Constantin şi Elena” is the successor building to an old wooden chapel erected by local residents in the first half of the 19th century.

It is built of brick and stone and features a hipped roof, a central tower, arcades and neoclassically inspired surrounds.

The church's patronal feast is celebrated every year on 21 May and attracts worshippers from throughout Insula Mare a Brăilei and from the neighboring villages.

The church building and the recurring festival date provide two different cultural points of reference. You can consider the architecture independently of the calendar date or examine both perspectives side by side.

Leisure on the Water

When making your selection, you can distinguish between the boat trip as access to the nature park and kayaking as a separate water activity. Kayaking is one of the recreational opportunities in the area around Mărașu.
