Bucharest: Hotels and Accommodations

Culture

The National Museum of Romanian History houses more than 690,000 objects illustrating the history of Romania from the earliest times to the present day. The attached lapidarium contains 165 stone objects that historically and stylistically represent the Romanian cultural sphere. The “Tezaurul Istoric” exhibition displays more than 3,000 special pieces made of precious metals and gemstones; some of them are unique.

The “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum opened to the public on May 17, 1936. Another historic residence is Casa Filipescu-Cesianu, one of the few aristocratic residences from Bucharest’s Belle Époque that has remained faithful to the original design. The museum in Casa Filipescu-Cesianu conveys 300 years of history relating to family, childhood, and private life. The grounds are used for recreation and leisure and include an exhibition area with a lapidarium, as well as events such as concerts and theater performances.

At the Palatul Parlamentului, a tour through four halls provides access to the art and architecture collections presented there.

Nature

The Dâmbovița River flows through Bucharest. Văcărești Nature Park has two themed trails focusing on biodiversity and the history of the site. The nature park provides habitat, resting, protection, and breeding conditions for more than 170 bird species.

The “Dimitrie Brandza” Botanical Garden covers 18.2 hectares. Its outdoor areas include, among others, areas for rare plants, the flora of Dobruja, a rose garden, and an iridarium. The indoor areas include greenhouses, a herbarium, a library, and an ecological education center. The garden contains around 4,000 taxa of living plants; the General Herbarium comprises more than 520,000 specimens.

City and Sightseeing

The Romanian Athenaeum can be visited as part of tourist tours outside rehearsal and concert times. Access is via 1 Benjamin Franklin Street after purchasing an admission ticket. For groups, the Philharmonic can offer guided tours of the Romanian Athenaeum in Romanian or English by prior appointment.

Markets

The annual Mărțișor market at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant features creative reinterpretations of the traditional spring amulet and practical handicraft workshops. The autumn farmers’ market at the same museum presents handicraft and culinary goods and demonstrations, including pickled vegetables, jams, and honey.
