Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain immediately south of the road between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. On the shore is the Balta Albă tourist rest area on DN 22 between the same two cities.
The Balta Albă nature reserve is designated as a geological and zoological protected area covering 1,167 hectares. It lies on the eastern edge of Buzău County and the northwestern edge of Brăila County. Under the management plan and regulatory framework of Romania’s Ministry of the Environment from 2025, Balta Albă belongs to protected area 2,271.

Lake Balta Albă is brackish, shallow, dimictic and eutrophic. It also contains pelogenic mud rich in organic components and therapeutic mud.
The ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău bird protection area is an important feeding and resting ground for red-breasted geese during the winter migration, scientifically known as Branta ruficollis. The same area is important for the breeding populations of the bittern, Botaurus stellaris, the purple heron, Ardea purpurea, and the ferruginous duck, Aythya nyroca.

The parish church of Balta Albă has a trefoil-shaped floor plan with two lateral apses and an octagonal tower. The church’s iconostasis was made in the workshops of Plumbuita Monastery and installed on August 18, 1990.
