Săcălaia brings together Lacul Știucilor, wetlands, a prehistoric settlement on the edge of the village, and a landscape of named hills. The prehistoric settlement of Săcălaia-Codomarc lies on the outskirts of Săcălaia village. The lake itself covers an area of 26 hectares. This means that a body of water, a protected landscape, and an archaeologically documented settlement site stand side by side in the same place.
The Lacul Știucilor Nature Reserve covers 140 hectares and lies in the commune of Fizeşu-Gherlii, in the village of Săcălaia, in Cluj County. It includes wetlands and forms part of the protected-area complex containing the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0099 “Lacul Știucilor–Sic–Puini–Bonțida”. The nature reserve also lies within the administrative territory of Fizeşu Gherlii commune. The 26 hectares refer to the area of the lake, while the 140 hectares refer to the nature reserve. Both the smaller water surface and the larger protected landscape are therefore relevant when placing the location in context.
Nature and landscape
The Dealul Ormanului and Ruptura are located in the surroundings of Săcălaia; both are hills. In the wider regional area are Dealul Netedu and Dealul Techeneu, which are also hills. The four landscape names thus belong to two differently defined areas: Dealul Ormanului and Ruptura are in the surroundings, while Dealul Netedu and Dealul Techeneu are in the wider regional area.
Local traditions and legends state that Lacul Știucilor was formed when a settlement collapsed into an underlying salt mine. Alongside this stands the natural-science classification of the lake as part of a protected wetland landscape. Lacul Știucilor is also known for its large pike. Thus, a traditional origin story, the lake’s inclusion in a protected area, and a specific feature of the lake come together in this location.
History and churches
The Biserica Ortodoxă Corpadea is located in the wider regional area of Săcălaia. Apahida is home to the Biserica Catolică Apahida, the Biserica Ortodoxă Veche Apahida, and the Biserica Ortodoxă Nouă Apahida. All four structures are churches; the three churches in Apahida form a separate group in contrast to the single church in Corpadea. Together with the settlement of Săcălaia-Codomarc and the local legends, they create a regional cultural connection encompassing various historical traces.
