Răchițele: Waterfall, mountain trails and ethnographic collection

Răchițele is characterized by striking landscapes around Valea Stanciului. Valea Stanciului and Cascada Răchiţele, also called Cascada Vălul Miresei, form a nature area protected at county level in the municipality of Mărgău. The waterfall is located on the Valea Stanciului in the Răchițele area of the municipality of Mărgău. Pietrele Albe also shapes the area around Răchițele and Săcuieu: the limestone complex comprises caves, shafts and vertical walls.

The 1,340 m-high Vârful Lespezi is also part of the landscape. From there, the view extends across the valley as a 360-degree panorama. Vârful Sturu and Podireea are mountains in the surroundings of Răchițele. Muncelul and Vârful Săstinii are mountains in the wider regional surroundings of Răchițele. The geographical references therefore range from nearby mountains to more broadly defined landscape features.

The Circuitul Răchițele leads from the village towards Valea Stanciului. The trail runs for approximately 5 km to Cascada Vălul Miresei and then returns to the Salvamont Răchițele refuge. The Circuitul Pietrelor Albe circular route leads from Răchițele via Valea Stanciului and past Cascada Vălul Miresei to an exposed, impressive ridge.

A considerably longer route is the PA circular route. It connects Cabana Vlădeasa with the Răchițele waterfall – Vălul Miresei and also leads to Pietrele Albe. The hike is difficult, covers more than 2,500 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately 12 to 13 hours. In winter, it can be completed depending on the amount and quality of the snow. Thus, an approximately 5 km-long circular route and a long route with substantial elevation gain and winter-related limitations stand side by side. For long mountain hikes, duration, elevation gain and winter snow conditions are among the details that should be checked before setting out.

An ethnographic collection from Răchițele is housed in a room at the local school. It includes festive women's and men's traditional costumes, woven textiles displayed on the wall, household items and traditional furniture. Clothing, textile work, everyday objects and furnishings are brought together here in one collection.

Cascada Vălul Miresei was also the venue for a historic sporting event: Cupa Răchițele, a national ice-climbing championship, was held at Cascada Vălul Miresei between 2004 and 2014. In the wider regional surroundings of Răchițele, Gorunul lui Horea also stands as a monument. Nearby are Biserica Mătişeşti and Biserica Sfinţii Arhangheli as churches, as well as Biserica Ortodoxă Nouă Horea as an Orthodox church.

The Salvamont Răchițele refuge can be reached by car from the village of Răchițele. The paved road runs through Valea Stanciului and Valea Seacă to the refuge.
