Culture

The Reformed Church of Sâncraiu preserves the Matia Bell, one of the oldest bells, dating from 1481, which is displayed in the churchyard.

The folk costume of Sâncraiu from the Kalotaszeg region is characterised by its rich colours as well as its simplicity and clear design. It is worn on holidays and at important occasions in village life.

A memorial monument to the poet Ady Endre stands in the courtyard of the kindergarten in Sâncraiu. There is also a statue of the same poet in the school courtyard.

The Felszeg Gyöngye dance group offers classes in three large groups with a total of around 80 participants, and also has a senior group.

A historical perspective is provided by the cellar exhibition “Trecutul comunității noastre în imagini”. It illustrates various aspects of the history of the village of Sâncraiu.

Thirteen carpentry workshops are still operating in the village. For your planning, you can distinguish between individual cultural artefacts, crafts and community customs.

During the Szüreti bál, young pairs of harvest guards make their way through the village in a striking horse-riding procession, singing. The men ride horses, while the women travel in a horse-drawn wagon. The participants wear traditional Kalotaszeg costumes and sing Kalotaszeg folk songs.

In Izvoru Crișului, roadside stalls and small shops along the E60, 12 km from Sâncraiu, sell handmade textiles, wood carvings and ceramics.

Landscape

Lake Kőhegy near Sâncraiu offers an opportunity for a picnic.

Dealul Mestecenilor is a mountain in the wider regional surroundings of Sâncraiu. Muncelul is also a mountain in this wider regional area. Măgura Buciumi and Măgura Bodiei are likewise classified as mountains there.

For your planning, you can consider landscape and culture separately. Nature, crafts, history and village life each place different emphasis. A cycle path longer than 12 kilometres includes a 3-kilometre section near Bánffyhunyad and a 5-kilometre section near Călățele added in August 2025.
