Nature and Coast

The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0197 „Plaja submersă Eforie Nord – Eforie Sud“ covers 141 ha in the Black Sea. At the edge of the Eforie resort lies Lake Techirghiol, a 10.68 km² lagoon with a maximum depth of 9 m, separated from the sea by a sandbar.

Lake Techirghiol is an important bird area and has been designated a Ramsar site since 2006. In winter, the lake provides ice-free waters where the red-breasted goose can overwinter. History and Architecture

Eforie Sud was founded in 1899, when the foundation stone for Hotel Movilă was laid. The foundation stone of the Nașterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul Church in Eforie Sud was laid on June 14, 1913; it was consecrated on August 25, 1935.

The Eforie Sud Casino is a representative example of maritime Art Deco architecture on the Romanian coast; between 1931 and 1935, it was built as part of a series of buildings intended for summer use. The archaeological site of Eforie Sud is designated as a historic monument.

The monumental artwork „Decor dobrogean“ from 1962 is located in Eforie Sud near Canteen No. 1. The statue „TinereÈ›ea“, a work by Oniță Iulia, was installed in Eforie Sud in 1962. The historical and artistic references thus range from ecclesiastical dating through maritime Art Deco architecture and heritage protection to art in the local setting.

Cinema and Local Culture

The Grădina de Vară Cinemascop open-air cinema is located in Eforie Sud. Grădina Cinemascop was built in 1958, operated continuously until the 2000s and was subsequently closed. It reopened in 2018.

In the cultural sphere, architecture, archaeology, art and cinema stand alongside one another as distinct themes. The Festivalul Pescarilor in Eforie Sud includes tasting exhibitions and cooking competitions focused on fish in the gastronomic tradition.
