The Șoimeni archaeological site lies at the foot of the Ciuc Mountains in the territory of Păuleni-Ciuc Municipality and occupies the natural promontory known as Várdomb (Dâmbul Cetății). Várdomb (Dâmbul Cetății) lies at an elevation of 882 metres on a connecting saddle between a mountain spur and a hill. The Dâmbul Cetății archaeological site is considered the most significant site with remains of the Costișa culture in Transylvania.

Archaeology and History

Many of the movable archaeological finds discovered during the archaeological investigations at Dâmbul Cetății were included in the “treasure” category. The National Museum of the Eastern Carpathians presents the archaeological exhibition entitled “Așezarea preistorică Păuleni-Ciuc Dâmbul Cetății”; at the museum’s headquarters in Sfântu Gheorghe, most of the finds discovered at Dâmbul Cetății are displayed in the permanent exhibition “Așezarea preistorică de la Păuleni-Ciuc”.

In the Delniţa district, next to the village church at the Tordavölgye site, there is a medieval archaeological site. It comprises a necropolis from the 14th and 15th centuries as well as a medieval settlement; the site is dated to the 14th to 15th centuries and the 17th century. The present-day freestanding Church of St. John the Baptist there was built between the middle and the end of the 15th century. This church’s parish is first documented in the papal tithe register of 1332–1333.

The Roman Catholic church in Păuleni-Ciuc was built in 1943 and consecrated in 1949.

Crafts and Local Offerings

The patterned wool carpets of the Ciuc region, influenced by Turkish patterns, continue to be produced in Păuleni-Ciuc. Women from Păuleni-Ciuc used to weave garments for the Franciscan friars of Csíksomlyó.

Local hosts offer carriage rides. Other offerings from local hosts include demonstrations of chimney-cake baking and demonstrations of traditional carpet weaving.

Hiking and Cycling

The second day of the Via Mariae leads from Lunca de Sus via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc and covers 26.8 kilometres as well as 9 hours and 45 minutes. The Via Mariae also leads from Ghimeș Făget via Delnița and Păuleni Ciuc to Șumuleu Ciuc; the route is specified as taking two days and covering 47.5 kilometres.

The paved farm road Vásárút near the Church of St. John the Baptist is popular with cyclists from the surrounding area.
