Ciulpăz Between Archaeology and Landscape

Culture and History

At the Gruniul Măgurii site, Roman traces in the form of a villa rustica were identified within the locality. Two Roman inscriptions were discovered in a garden in Ciulpăz. Traces of Roman structures, including kilns, were also identified within the locality. The Roman evidence is therefore distributed across different locations and includes both inscriptions and structural remains. The Biserica Haiducilor near Ciulpăz is a centuries-old wooden church; only a few boards covered with moss and lichen remain of it in a forest. The sites and surviving remains therefore differ significantly in their described form.

The archaeological rock-shelter settlement of Peștera Bulgărelu lies on a wooded slope on the left side of the Zlaşti Valley, east of Ciulpăz. It has a low entrance leading into a chamber paved with stones detached from the vault; ceramic and osteological remains were identified there. The low entrance and paved chamber shape the specific description of the site, while the ceramic and osteological remains supplement the findings identified there.

Landscape

The mountain Dealul Cutinului lies in the immediate surroundings of Ciulpăz, while the hill Dealul Archiei is located near the locality. In the wider regional area lie the mountain Dealul Bunila and the mountain Măgura Sârbii. In the administrative area of Peștişu Mic, the Valea Roatei recreational area is designated as a tourist destination. Hunyad Castle is located near Ciulpăz. From 14 to 16 June 2024, the second round of the Romanian Hard Enduro Championship, Hard Enduro Poiana Rusca, was held in Ciulpăz, Hunedoara County.
