Hunedoara: Corvin Castle, Churches and Swimming Pools

Corvin Castle is considered the most representative monument of 15th-century military architecture in Eastern Europe. The oldest fortress of Hunedoara, the core of today’s Corvin Castle, dates from the early 15th century.

Culture

The Casa Breslelor, an exhibition about the guilds of Hunedoara housed in a 17th-century building, is located in the outer castle courtyard (Curtea Husarilor) of Corvin Castle. The exhibition on the prehistory and early history of Hunedoara is also located in the outer courtyard; it is housed in a 17th-century administrative building. The admission ticket for Corvin Castle also includes a visit to this exhibition in Curtea Husarilor.

The castle chapel is located on the eastern side of Corvin Castle and displays features of local Gothic ecclesiastical architecture. The actual palace on the western side includes the Knights’ Hall, the Diet Hall and a spiral staircase.

A document dated 5 July 1548 records royal permission for the Serbs and Vlachs living in Hunedoara to build a new church in place of the older church.

St. Nicholas Church is located near Corvin Castle in Hunedoara. The historian Nicolae Iorga dated the current building of St. Nicholas Church to the years 1634 to 1654.

Water and Recreation

The Hunedoara swimming pool has two modern pools: one is 25 m long, has six lanes, a depth of 1.90 m and a water temperature of 29 °C; the other is 15 m long, 1 m deep and has a water temperature of 33 °C. The swimming pool also offers a beginner program with specialized coaches for participants aged four and over. There is also a sauna area. The Hunedoara municipal beach complex has three pools, including a children’s pool.
