Șotrile Commune consists predominantly of Subcarpathian hills; in the north, a lower mountain level rises in the Baiului Mountains. Cucuiatu reaches an elevation of 826 m in this stepped hill and mountain landscape. On the commune’s highest mountain level, Vârful Frumos reaches 1,447 m.
The Doftana Gorges, also known as the Brebul Gorges, lie above Lunca Mare and extend up to Vârful Cucuiatu. Below the Paltinu Dam, the Doftana Valley has a pronounced floodplain, particularly downstream from Lunca Mare to its confluence with the Prahova.
The Câmpinița River is formed by the Serbuloaia and Boncu streams and flows through the western part of Șotrile. The vegetation of Șotrile includes forests, natural meadows, pastures, arable land and orchards.
Culture and history
The Sfântul Nicolae Church in Șotrile was built between 1882 and 1884 by Prince Dimitrie Barbu Știrbei together with the residents working on his estate. The church’s current paintings were executed in 1937 by Dimitrie Hornu in the Byzantine style using matte oil paint. A primary school was housed for a time in the bell tower of the Sfântul Nicolae Church.
The Sfântul Pantelimon Church in Lunca Mare was begun in 1908 and completed in 1909. Historic houses in Șotrile include the Steliana Cheluș House from the late 19th or early 20th century, the Elena Dan House from 1900, the Ion I. Dăscăleciu House from 1910, the Silvia Bârsan House from 1920, the Dan Gh. Ion House from the mid-19th century and the Ana Stănică House from 1907.
Routes
The Muscel–Voila–Șotrile route reaches Șotrile after approximately 5 km through the Voila Forest. Before entering Șotrile Commune, this route allows for a short walk to Vârful Cucuiatu. The moderately difficult circular route to Vârful Cucuiatul is 18 km long and takes 2.5 hours to walk.
Traditions
Traditional historical means of subsistence in Șotrile included gathering forest fruits and mushrooms. Beekeeping was an important traditional occupation in Șotrile.
In Lunca Mare, in the Doftana River Valley, there is a trout farm dating from 1960 with six earthen ponds.
Geographical setting
The DJ207 county road connects Câmpina via Șotrile with Vistieru; the route is listed as 19 km long. There are no museums or memorial houses in Șotrile Commune.
