Nature
Bucegi Nature Park is a protected area and part of the Natura 2000 network. Over thousands of years, wind erosion of conglomerate rock has created natural rock formations there, including Sfinxul and Babele, which rank among the most impressive in Europe. Bucegi Nature Park has a total of 10 thematic trails.
Culture and History
Peleș Castle was built on the initiative of King Carol I as a summer residence and served political, cultural, and symbolic functions. In 1953, it became a national museum and was opened to the general public. The royal residences of Sinaia comprise Peleș, Pelișor, and Foișor, set in a landscaped park surrounded by old forests and mountain cliffs.
The Roman fort at Drajna de Sus is located on Grădiștea Hill between the valleys of the Ogretin and Drajna rivers and was built during the First Dacian War in 101 and 102 AD.
Numerous Romanian and foreign scientific and cultural figures visited Nicolae Iorga’s house in Vălenii de Munte; Iorga founded several cultural institutions there.
Museums
The Sinaia Monastery Museum is considered the first museum of its kind in Romania and has operated continuously since its foundation. It opened to the public in 1895 and displays the Bucharest Bible of 1688 as well as five icons by Pârvu Mutu from around 1693.
The Sinaia City Museum has been open to the general public since December 18, 2017. It is housed in the Florescu-Știrbei Palace, which was built in 1875.
The George Enescu Memorial House in Sinaia has been a department of the George Enescu National Museum since 2007. George Enescu had Vila Luminiș in Sinaia built according to his own designs between 1923 and 1926; the memorial house displays documentary materials about the musician’s life and work in two rooms.
Places to Visit
Visitors currently reach Mina Unirea in the Slănic Prahova salt mine by minibus, descending to a depth of 208 meters. Slănic can be reached via national road DN1 and by minibuses departing every 30 minutes from Ploiești Nord.
Mina Unirea was created by extracting 2.9 million m³ of salt and consists of 14 trapezoidal chambers covering an area of approximately 80,000 m². Mina Unirea has sports courts, a children’s play area, go-karting, table tennis, billiards, air hockey, and mini-golf.
