Stâna: Wooden Church and Ceatarâș Music

The wooden church “Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică” stands in Stâna. It dates from the 18th century, approximately 1778, and is listed as a national monument. The preserved paintings are executed in a Western style and were created by an anonymous artist in the late 18th or early 19th century.

The church has a pronaos, a rectangular nave, a lower hexagonal apse, a tower positioned on the nave at the western end, and a shingle roof. The porch was converted into a pronaos in 1820. A dovetail joint is used in the massive wooden beams, serving both a structural and a decorative function. A projecting gallery is supported by four ornately carved columns; each column has three decorative arms. The architectural details therefore range from the basic form of the nave to the carefully crafted joints and gallery columns. For those interested in culture, the building’s structure, construction, and ornamental workmanship complement the study of the church. In historic wooden buildings, the roof, tower, and apse draw attention to the exterior form, while the beam joints and carvings demonstrate the craftsmanship.

Preserved paintings can be seen on the vault of the nave. They depict scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Last Supper. The motifs are part of the nave’s pictorial decoration and stand alongside the structural features of the wooden building.

Izidor Șerban (1931–2008) was a representative Ceatarâș of the Codru region. The CD “Danțurile Codrenilor,” released in 2011, contains 17 pieces that he performed together with the taraf from the village of Stâna.

Local Ceatarâși also performed at a memorial event for Izidor Șerban held in Stâna on June 13, 2022. A memorial plaque for him was unveiled at the Stâna cultural center on the same date; the cultural center was subsequently intended to bear his name. The “Izidor Șerban” folklore festival took place in Stâna on April 30, 2023. For musical events with a fixed date, the date and time should be checked before travelling.

The commune of Socond lies at the foot of the Codru; around 80 percent of its terrain is hilly. The direct unpaved road between Soconzel and Stâna is impassable. Access to Stâna is via DN 19A and DJ 196 through neighboring Beltiug.
