Culture and History

The Biserica Sf. Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavril in Tilișca is listed as a religious building in the Romanian register of historic monuments. The Ethnographic Museum of Tilișca opened in 2003 in a single-story old house that belonged to a family from Tilișca.

The museum presents three stages in the development of houses in Mărginimea Sibiului: one-room houses, houses with an entrance room and another interior room, and houses with three rooms. The comparison shows how the division of space changed within these types of houses.

The combination of the church, museum, and the two fortress sites distributes the historical evidence across different forms of construction and use: the religious building, the development of residential houses, and the military installations each represent a distinct aspect.

The Dacian fortress of Tilișca is located on Cățănaș Hill. On Cetate Hill, west of the municipality of Tilișca, are the ruins of a medieval fortress with stone walls and a defensive ditch. The two fortification sites refer to different historical periods; residential forms, religious architecture, and defensive structures can therefore be considered separate topics.

County road DJ 106E runs through Tilișca and connects Săliște, Galeș, Tilișca, Rod, Poiana Sibiului, Jina, and Susag. The transhumance route runs from Rod via Tilișca to Galeș; Tilișca lies between Rod and Galeș. The road and the historic route therefore describe two different spatial contexts: the connection between several places and the course of a route between Rod and Galeș.

The Sibiel–Crinț–Tilișca–Săliște–Sibiel cycling route passes through the meadows of Tilișca. About an hour’s walk from Tilișca, on Negoi Hill at an elevation of 1,040 meters, are hay meadows and shepherds’ huts. For day planning, these details differ mainly in terms of the mode of travel and the approximate duration of the walk; the cycling route, by contrast, specifies a particular circuit with Tilișca as one of its locations.

The houses in Tilișca include older, colorful homes decorated with crosses and icons. This complements the museum’s presentation of the settlement: the museum focuses on the stages of development and the division of interior space, while the houses in the village appear as a separate architectural feature through their colors and decoration.

The Tilișca Shepherds’ Festival takes place every year on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
