Baia – Churches, Museum and Cultural History

The Baia-Cetățuie archaeological site lies 2 kilometers southeast of Baia on the right bank of the Moldova River, in the immediate vicinity of the Baia forestry lodge. Parts of the site are covered by a relatively sparse beech and hornbeam forest.

Culture and History

According to tradition, the Biserica Albă in Baia is attributed to Ștefan cel Mare. The church was built from unworked and hewn stone, and its walls are 1.8 to 2 meters thick. Its furnishings include a votive painting depicting Ștefan cel Mare, Doamna Maria and the children Alexandru, Bogdan, Petru, Olena, Maria and Bogdan Vlad, as well as a depiction of the Battle of Baia. According to tradition, Ștefan cel Mare is said to have built the Biserica Albă in memory of his victory in 1467 over the Hungarian king Matei Corvin.

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Baia was founded by Petru RareÈ™ in 1532 and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The ruins of the Catholic cathedral in Baia were built in 1410 on the orders of Prince Alexandru cel Bun for his wife Margareta. The three religious buildings thus represent different historical contexts, ranging from a traditional attribution and a foundation to the preserved ruins of a cathedral.

Museum

The History and Ethnography Museum in Baia is housed in the 19th-century town hall, a building constructed during the time of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The museum comprises a history section and an ethnography section. The history section displays chronologically arranged exhibits from the Neolithic, ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary periods. The ethnography section presents aspects of housing, traditional dress, customs and traditional activities from the area around Baia.
