Culture and History

The Biserica Albă is located in the centre of Baia Commune. According to local tradition, it is attributed to Ștefan cel Mare, who is said to have built it to commemorate his victory over the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus in 1467. The church is built from rough and dressed stone, and its walls are 1.8 to 2 metres thick.

The Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului“ was founded by Petru Rareş in 1532. It is built of stone and bricks on a rectangular plan without a tower.

The Baia Museum of History and Ethnography was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the municipality. It is housed in a 19th-century town hall building erected during the time of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Prehistoric objects from various periods can be viewed in the museum.

Archaeology

The „Cetățuia“ archaeological site near Baia dates from the Bronze Age and the Neolithic and is located 2 km southwest of the settlement. Tools and weapons made of stone, flint, marl and obsidian, as well as a dwelling, have been preserved at the site.

The Baia–În Muchie archaeological site lies at an altitude of 375 metres on the first floodplain terrace of the Moldova River between Șomuzul Mocirlos and Șomuzul Mare. Vessels from the Precucuteni period found in the „În Muchie“ area near Baia are more than 7,000 years old and attest to traces of human civilisation dating from 5,200 to 5,100 BC.

Dealul Bogata is a hill in the immediate vicinity of Baia Commune. Dealul Bogatei and Dealul Spătăreşti are hills in the surroundings of Baia Commune. The Baia–Cetățuie archaeological site is partly covered by beech and hornbeam forest.

In the wider regional surroundings of Baia Commune are Mânăstirea Secu and Schitul Sâhăstria, both of which are monasteries. The Biserica Sfântul Dumitru, a church, is also located there; Voroneţ Monastery lies in the same wider regional surroundings. Muntele Bivolul is a mountain there.

Events

The „Baia – File de istorie“ festival is a scholarly and cultural-artistic tribute to Baia’s legendary past. Each edition includes a symposium on historical topics.

„Hora de la Baia“ is a cultural event promoting authentic local customs and traditions, as well as Moldavian folk costume and folk dances. It includes exhibitions of traditional art and a parade of regional folk costumes.

Baia lies on the left bank of the Moldova River. County road 209H connects Baia Commune with Fălticeni. European route E85 is 5 km from Baia Commune.
