Păltinoasa: Landscape, Trails and Culture

Păltinoasa lies on the left slope of the Moldova Valley, at the transition between the Obcines of Bukovina to the west and the piedmont-like Ciungi Massif to the east. Beech, spruce and maple forests surround the commune, and the Moldova River flows through Păltinoasa.

Geographical setting

The commune of Păltinoasa developed along old routes connecting Moldavia, Transylvania and Maramureș. It lies on the DN 17 national road. The road and the railway connection near Păltinoasa established a link between Chernivtsi and Vatra Dornei. The commune provides a strategic starting point for tourist routes to the Bukovinian monasteries with exterior frescoes.

Culture

The village of Păltinoasa was founded at the beginning of the 18th century. The traditional weaving of carpets is preserved in the village. In the commune of Păltinoasa, visitors can see the “Ignătescu Toader” wood sculpture exhibition. Casa Polonă is located in the centre of Păltinoasa and was inaugurated on 28 June 1998. The commune also has a space for a museum of folk traditions, established as part of a European-funded project.

In the village of Capu Codrului in the commune of Păltinoasa, there is a historic monument honouring Romanian national heroes. In the centre of the village of Păltinoasa stands the “Înălțarea Domnului” Church, which was consecrated in 1912. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Păltinoasa was built in 1857.

Places

Poiana Dacilor is an art site in Păltinoasa on the bank of the Bucovăț stream. It features stone-carved depictions of the Dacian kings Burebista and Decebal. At the centre is a wooden wolf’s head sculpture, regarded as a Dacian battle standard.

Nature

The Cacica–Vârfu Dealului–Păltinoasa forest trail begins at the bridge over the Bucovăț stream in Păltinoasa. After a few hundred metres, the last houses of the village are left behind, and the forest rises ahead. From the commune of Păltinoasa, the “Șoimul” ski slope in the Gura Humorului–Ariniș area is reached very quickly. The forest trail and the ski slope represent different types of activity.
