Culture and History
The archaeological site of Cetatea Halmyris, a Roman and Roman-Byzantine fortress, lies 2.5 kilometres east of the village of Murighiol. Halmyris was the seat of military units and a station of the Danube fleet Classis Flavia Moesica. Military, civil and religious buildings were excavated there, including a basilica with the crypt of Epictetus and Astion, the first martyrs of Dobruja.
The relics of Epictetus and Astion were discovered in summer 2001 and are venerated at Halmyris Monastery; since 2008, the complete relics have been displayed for veneration at Halmyris Monastery in Murighiol. The annual Festivalul Serbarile Apei ÅŸi Pescuitului takes place from 15 to 17 September and was established in 2000.
Winter customs are observed in the village of Murighiol from Christmas Eve on 24 December until Epiphany on 6 January. These include colindatul, pluguşorul, semănatul, sorcova, capra and ursul.
Nature and Waterways
The protected natural area of Lacul Beibugeac-Plopu is located near the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The fine, invertebrate-rich muddy bottom of Lacul Beibugeac-Plopu attracts waders, ducks, shelducks and swans.
The Murighiol area features a varied landscape with hills and valleys and is bordered by the Danube to the east. Ghiolul Pietrei is designated as a fishing spot in the Murighiol area. A tourist pass is required to access the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
Waterways
From Murighiol, boat trips are possible into the lake area of Lakes Isac, Isacel and Uzlina. The waterways Traseul 5, Traseul 6, Traseul 7 and Traseul 8 begin in Murighiol and lead back there.
Traseul 5 is described as a waterway from Murighiol via the Canalul Dranov to Gura Portiţei and back to Murighiol via the Canalul Dunavăţ. Traseul 6 is described as a circular water route from Murighiol via the Canalul Dunavăţ, Canalul Cocoş, Canalul Mustaca, Canalul de Centură and Canalul Dranov back to Murighiol. Traseul 7 is described as a circular water route from Murighiol via Uzlina, Lacul Uzlina, Lacul Isac and Gârla Perivolovca back to Murighiol.
The hiking route Traseul D3 is described as running from Murighiol to Lacul Sărături and back.
