Culture and History
The medieval Enisala fortress was built for military purposes in the second half of the 14th century, very probably by Genoese merchants. In places, its walls and bastions are still preserved to a height of 5 to 10 metres. The fortress can be reached via the E87 Tulcea–Babadag road and then the DJ 223A to Enisala.
The farm museum in Enisala presents a synthesis of the traditional architecture of northern Dobrudja from the beginning of the 20th century. The museum includes a house with a storeroom, as well as a stable, shed, kitchen, summer kitchen with an oven, dovecote and well. The farm museum “Gospodăria țărănească conservată «in situ» – Enisala” was scheduled to close from 27 October 2025 due to restoration work as part of a project running from 2024 to 2027.
The Lipovan women’s traditional costume in Sarichioi preserves the structure of the old Russian costume from the area around Moscow and the middle Volga. Lipovan folklore in Sarichioi includes ritual forms associated with calendar customs, important life events and incantations. The Lipovans in Sarichioi founded the folklore ensemble “Landâș” (“Lăcrămioara”). In the historic area of Sarichioi, there are also Lipovan farmhouses that are more than a century old.

The market in Sarichioi takes place on Sundays. Sarichioi has an old fishing harbour. The “Enisala – Unitate la Cetate” festival has been held for several years in August at the foot of Enisala Fortress.
