Gamzigrad: Antiquity, Technology and Regional Culture
Gamzigrad combines Roman history, technological monuments, river landscapes and regional traditions. For planning your trip, the combination of Felix Romuliana, the HE Gamzigrad hydroelectric power plant and the town’s cultural events is particularly interesting.
Key facts about Gamzigrad
Felix Romuliana is a late Roman palace and memorial complex. Emperor Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximianus commissioned it in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. The archaeological site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
The more recent history of technology is also part of the character of the place: the HE Gamzigrad hydroelectric power plant was built in 1909 and is one of the oldest hydroelectric power plants in Serbia. Its historical and technological focus makes Gamzigrad a destination that is not limited to a single era.
What does Felix Romuliana reveal about its history?
The northern half of Felix Romuliana contains a well-preserved imperial palace with a small temple and an altar. The southern section contains the remains of a large temple with two crypts, as well as an ancient Roman bath. Felix Romuliana therefore encompasses different areas of the late Roman complex.
The historical surroundings also include Mount Magura. About 1 km from the main entrance to Felix Romuliana, it contains a memorial complex with two mausoleums: the Mausoleum of Galerius and the Mausoleum of Romula. There are also two consecration monuments in the form of huge tumulus mounds. These mounds mark the place where an apotheosis ritual was performed for Galerius and his mother Romula.
What other experiences shape Gamzigrad?
The Gamzigrad hydroelectric power plant began operating on November 1, 1909, and illuminated the first electric light bulbs in the market square of Zaječar. HE Gamzigrad is also regarded as a unique museum and technological site. The facility thus complements the Roman history with tangible evidence of the region’s electrification.
The Crni Timok forms large meanders near Gamzigrad. The aesthetic and tourism-related recreational value of this area is considered particularly significant. In the Gamzigrad area, the river is also used for sport fishing. For hikers, the Bastionska transverzala passes through Felix Romuliana as checkpoint 4.
Regional culture includes the traditional Đurđevdanski sabor, which is held in Gamzigrad. It takes place every year with an extensive cultural and artistic program that visitors can also enjoy. At the event, the custom “Promuz ovaca” was presented; the KUD “Romulijana” from Gamzigrad presented the custom “Sn Vasiju”. The sabor also included an exhibition of traditional foods and a cooking competition for lamb chorba.
What is useful to know for getting around Gamzigrad?
Nearby Gamzigradska Banja has two indoor pools with warm water as part of a specialized hospital. This fact is relevant to regional orientation, but says nothing about the general facilities of accommodations.
