Smrecany – Churches, Hrádok and Routes to the West Tatras

Smrečany is home to the Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity, completed in 1880, the ancient Hrádok hillfort and routes along the Smrečianka. Via the Žiarska Valley, the village is a gateway to the West Tatras; at the same time, churches, historic buildings, memorial sites and routes come together here in a variety of thematic areas.

Culture

The Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1880 and has a 25-metre-high tower and three bells. At the entrance to the grounds of the Evangelical church stands a monument to those who fell in the First World War. It names 29 fallen men from Smrečany. The Church of the Presentation of the Lord preserves Gothic tracery windows, Gothic wall paintings and frescoes, as well as a painted wooden ceiling in the nave. The church is a national cultural monument. For visits outside church services, visitors must arrange an appointment and a guided tour in advance.

The Aristid Smrečiansky Manor House was originally built around 1750 in the Rococo style. Around 1810, its façade was altered in the Classical style; at the same time, it retains its original entrance gate with wooden doors. Smrečany also continues to maintain a tradition of amateur theatre.

History

Hrádok is an ancient hillfort and is considered one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Liptov. Its origins are dated to the Hallstatt period, that is, to the period from the 6th to the 4th century BC. The hillfort lies on a spur terrace north of the Gothic church in Smrečany. An earthen rampart is preserved on its western side.

The Pamätná izba Smrečany preserves objects and documents relating to Smrečany’s more than seven-hundred-year history and the way of life of its inhabitants. The collection includes traditional wooden tools and original local clothing. There, visitors can browse and read various editions of the works Jano and Stretutie while sitting at old school desks.

Nature and Routes

Along the Smrečianka, the Green Zone offers a walk with stops at information boards. These also guide visitors to the village museum, churches and monuments. The walk can be extended to the monument to the victims of the Second World War battles at Háj-Nicovom.

Smrečany has numerous routes and trails for hiking, cycling, skiing, ski mountaineering and agrotourism. They enable sporting activities in both summer and winter. Via the Žiarska Valley, Smrečany is a gateway to the West Tatras. The routes and trails mentioned are easily accessible from nearby Liptovský Mikuláš.
