Slovakia: Hotels and Accommodations

There are 6,200 known caves in Slovakia, 18 of which are open to the public. Domica Cave offers a boat ride on the underground Styx River. At the same time, it is an important archaeological site: people lived there 5,000 to 6,000 years ago during the Neolithic period.

Nature and Landscape

Slovakia has nine national parks. Slovak Paradise National Park encompasses karst plateaus, gorges, waterfalls, and caves.

Slovak Karst National Park is considered the largest karst area in Central Europe and covers 440 square kilometers. This national park contains around 1,100 caves and karst shafts that are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The High Tatras comprise 25 peaks higher than 2,500 meters. Tatra National Park protects the high-alpine flora and fauna of the High Tatras, one of the highest European mountain regions north of the Alps.

In Pieniny National Park, visitors can rent a raft and explore the Dunajec River by water.

Hiking and Trails

Slovakia has more than 14,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails. The Stratená Canyon educational trail was the first educational trail in Slovakia to also be designed for wheelchair users. It is 1.1 kilometers long and has eight stations.

Culture and History

Vlkolínec is a folk architecture reservation inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Its original buildings have remained largely untouched by modern development. The village preserves 45 log houses with associated farmsteads dating from the 18th century.

The farmhouse in Vlkolínec was built in 1886 and opened to the public in 1991. Its well-preserved original interior and furnishings illustrate the way of life of its former inhabitants from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Spiš Castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The complex covers more than four hectares and is partly in ruins; at the same time, it is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe.

The Gothic Route in the Spiš and Gemer regions leads to more than six dozen architectural monuments. The festival in Východná is a summer cultural festival where Slovak folk traditions can be experienced.

Historic Railways

The historic train route runs for 6.8 kilometers from Skanzen Station via the first passing loop to Kubátkovia Station and back to Skanzen Station. The functionally restored section known as the Historic Forest Railway, with passing loops, was used as a museum railway in the 1990s.

Cuisine and Wine

Bryndzové halušky is considered Slovakia’s national dish. Along one of Slovakia’s eight wine routes, visitors can discover Slovak wines and regional specialties.

Traveling Around the Country

Slovakia’s main railway line runs from Bratislava via Žilina and Poprad to Košice.
