Hrboltová combines preserved buildings, local history and paths through the forest park. A church with a medieval core, masonry stone granaries, monuments and viewpoints give the town several clearly identifiable points of interest. This picture is complemented by the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary in Hruštie, a signposted cycling route through the local districts and the announced traditional “Stavanie mája”.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Hrboltová preserves part of a Gothic church originally built in the 13th century. This section survives as a side chapel; the building was remodeled in the 19th century. The preserved sanctuary contains the original rib vault with a central keystone. Thus, different building phases exist side by side in one place: the Gothic origins, the surviving sacred space and the 19th-century alteration of the building.
Another historical trace is provided by the masonry stone granaries in Hrboltová. They are among the oldest buildings in the town. The historic stone granaries house an exhibition on the history of the Hrboltová district. The building and the exhibition are therefore directly connected: the buildings themselves form part of the older building stock, while the exhibition is dedicated to the history of the district.
Paths and Viewpoints
Hrboltová Forest Park offers an easy walk to war memorials and a viewpoint. An easily accessible viewpoint is located in the upper part of the forest park. In the central area, there are monuments to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. The cycling route “Z Ružomberka k močiaru v Stankovanoch” passes through Nová Hrboltová to Hrboltová and by Hrboltová Forest Park, with a monument to the world wars. Thus, a walking path, viewpoint, memorial sites and a cycling route running through the town all meet in the same green area.
Chapel and Surroundings
The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is located in Hruštie on the road between Nová Hrboltová and Hrboltová. It was moved from the old road in Nová Hrboltová to its present location. The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary offers a view of the church in Černová. Its present location, its former position on the old road and the view of Černová are distinct features of this place.
Tradition
The traditional “Stavanie mája” was announced for Hrboltová. The announced event included a procession from the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria to the Potočná stop. The status as an announced event remains unchanged, as does the specific route of the procession through Hrboltová.
