Hotels in Skalica: Churches, Wine and Routes to the Baťov Canal

Skalica combines Romanesque, Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture within a compact area, along with vineyards, nature trails and excursions on the Baťov Canal. The history of the town is particularly evident in its churches and exhibitions: the Rotunda of St. George is an originally Romanesque building that probably dates from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Its upper section, connected to the fortifications, served a defensive purpose, while the lower section was used as a chapel.

Culture

The Franciscan Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is a Gothic building dating from the middle of the 15th century. The Franciscan monastery includes a cloister courtyard and a gallery in the cloisters. Skalický trdelník is prepared traditionally in the monastery’s black kitchen. The Dom kultúry in Skalica is an Art Nouveau building that has been preserved in its original form since 1905. The building houses a permanent exhibition of the Záhorie Museum and the Júlia Korezsku Gallery.

The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel was converted in the Late Gothic period from a single-nave church into a three-nave basilica. Its tower offers views of Skalica and the surrounding area; the parish church’s observation tower is accessible via more than 126 wooden steps. The Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier preserves historical stucco decoration, parts of frescoes, access to the crypts and an altarpiece that ranks among the largest in Slovakia. An exhibition on the history of printing in Skalica traces the beginnings of printing locally to the printing house founded by the Jesuits in the early 1670s. There is also an exhibition of the Apothecary of the Brothers of Charity, featuring restored furnishings from the middle of the 18th century as well as historical pharmacy objects. The restored mill of the Pilárik brothers is also open to the public.

Nature and Trails

From Skalica, cyclists can use routes to the Morava River, the Baťov Canal and Zlatnícka dolina. Marked hiking trails around Skalica lead, among other places, to Zlatnícka dolina, Čupy, Mlýnky, Chvojnica and Vrbovce. The educational trail at Perúnska lúka begins at the Skalica fishponds and runs as a 500-metre nature trail with eight stations.

In the nearby Zlatnícka dolina there is a public natural swimming area with three pools. Activities available there include swimming, beach volleyball and sports equipment rental. On the Baťov Canal, boat excursions can include the Skalica–Strážnice route and return, passing through a lock.

Wine and Regional Specialties

Skalický rubín is a wine from the Skalica wine-growing region. It is a blend of Skalická frankovka, Svätovavrinecké and Modrý portugal. On the surrounding slopes there are more than 500 wine cottages used for processing and storing wine. Trdlofest 2026 is an event featuring Skalický trdelník and good wine.
