Dravograd: Hotels, Cycling Routes, Lake and Culture

Dravograd is a hub for cyclists: the Drava Cycling Route and Štrekna meet here. The Drava Cycling Route runs from the Vič border crossing through the centre of Dravograd, across the bridge to Bukovje and onwards towards Trbonje. Štrekna is a 35-kilometre cycle path through the Mislinja Valley and the Huda Luknja Gorge. The route is fully paved and separated from other traffic. In Dravograd, cyclists can also use intermodal transport options, including bus and train connections.

Cycle Paths and Circular Routes

Several routes lead from Dravograd into the surrounding landscape. The Dravograd–Grad Forest Educational Trail runs as a circular route from the town through the forest and past the old castle. It is considered easy and suitable for a wide range of hikers. The Pot za srce recreational trail leads from the Dravograd Health Centre up to the old castle, then descends to the Drava and Lake Dravograd before returning along the banks of the Drava to the health centre. On the left bank, the Ribniška pot trail passes the Dom koroških ribičev v Dravogradu, the Koroška Fishermen’s Centre in Dravograd.

Nature and Birdlife

Lake Dravograd is a wetland ecosystem with islands and reed beds. More than 150 species of waterbirds find refuge and nesting grounds here. The Drava near Dravograd is part of a Natura 2000 site. The Bobrčkova učna pot educational trail runs around Lake Dravograd. It includes seven stations where the beaver introduces plants and animals that live in and around Lake Dravograd. The themed trails around the lake provide opportunities for birdwatching. Next to Lake Dravograd, the Fishing Hall houses a natural history collection depicting the habitats of the Drava, Meža and Mislinja rivers.

At the end of the Bobrčkova učna pot educational trail, visitors are invited to the Karavanke Geopark information point in Bukovje Manor. The exhibitions “Zakladi nemirne reke” and “Dravit – svetovni popotnik iz Dravograda” can be viewed there.

Culture and History

Bukovje Manor is a Baroque manor house. The Dravograd Museum presents a permanent exhibition there about the Slovenian War of Independence in Koroška in 1991. The rich history of the noble Kometer family is also presented there. Bukovje Manor hosts a wide range of social events; its modern offerings are integrated with the manor’s natural surroundings and cultural heritage.

The Dravograd Museum presents the history of the developing town and its surroundings from the past through modern history. Dravograd is also home to the important Romanesque Church of St Vitus. The ruins of Dravograd Castle are an immovable local cultural monument. They can be reached from the centre of Dravograd via a footpath or by car along a road.

The Gestapo Prisons collection is housed in five former prison cells in the basement of the Dravograd municipal building. The Gestapo Prisons exhibition can only be visited by prior appointment; individual visits are not possible.
