Škocjan: Hotels, Church and Hiking Trails
Škocjan lies in the Radulja Valley. The town was first mentioned in 1306 and has developed over more than seven centuries.
Culture and History
The parish of Škocjan is one of the oldest parishes in Slovenia. In the centre, the 17th-century church "Cerkev sv. Kancijana in tovarišev mučencev" occupies a prominent position on a hill. The presbytery of the church contains the painting "Sv. Kancijana v slavi", created by Matej Sternen. Beneath the gallery, south of Jeršetič's tomb, there is a memorial plaque commemorating the missionary and explorer of the White Nile, Dr Ignacij Knoblehar.
Jelka is a tour guide who leads larger and smaller groups to the sights of Škocjan.
Bridge and Trails
Because of its dimensions, shape and construction, the stone two-arched bridge over the Radulja is one of the few remaining bridges of its kind in Dolenjska. The bridge carries a road connecting the Krka Valley with the Sava Valley.
The Knobleharjeva pot begins in Škocjan in front of the municipal building. It connects places in the vicinity of Škocjan associated with Ignacij Knoblehar. Every February, hikers set out from Metelkov dom on a hike along the Metelkova pot. The starting point in front of the municipal building is named just as specifically as the places connected by the trail in the surrounding area. The annual February hike also establishes Metelkov dom as another explicitly named reference point for this trail.
Events
The Škocjan na Dolenjskem Tourist Association lists the accordion competition "Tekmovanje harmonikarjev" among its annually organised events. The 25th accordion competition "Škocjanska harmonika" was successfully concluded in 2026. The Kmečke igre take place every year around the PGD Škocjan fire station during the KNOBLEHARJEVO municipal holiday.
When comparing hotels or other accommodation in Škocjan, check the exact location, accommodation type, occupancy and included services on the respective offer page. Also pay attention to the breakdown of the price components as well as the booking and cancellation conditions. For budget-conscious planning, this overview shows which services are already included and which costs are listed separately. When travelling with several people, the stated occupancy is also a clear point of comparison between offers. Review the offers and compare the conditions you want to clarify before booking. It is also worth checking the payment and billing details: verify whether taxes, fees or other price components are already included in the total amount. Also compare when payment is due and which deadlines apply in the event of a change or cancellation. This allows the details to be compared using the same fields.
