Šmarjeta is a place where culture, wine and active pursuits can be linked to specific names. Between St Margaret’s Church, regional wines, a circular hiking trail and a cycling route, a diverse picture emerges, complemented by destinations in the surrounding area and the wider region.

Culture and History

St Margaret’s Church in Šmarjeta was built between 1909 and 1928. Inside, visitors can view a 17th-century crucifixion painting. Another cultural reference point is Dvorec Gregorčič: the building is the birthplace of the Slovenian ornamental artist Jože Karlovšek. Šmarjeta therefore has both an early-20th-century church building and a birthplace associated with an important Slovenian artistic figure representing its local cultural history.

Wine and Regional Products

Wine plays a role in several specific offerings in the area. At the “Izvir cvička” wine fountain complex, four of the five automated taps are used for wine tasting. The complex offers wines from the surrounding vineyards. Selected Slovenian wines are also served at Dvorec Gregorčič. Moletova hiša provides another insight into the local orientation: it houses a tourist information centre that informs visitors about the Šmarješke Toplice destination and helps them find their way around. Moletova hiša also includes a small shop with local products and souvenirs.

Routes and Landscape

For hiking, the Šmarjeta Hiking Route is described as a 6 km circular trail. The cycling route “Ob vznožju Gorjancev” offers another way to get around. It is suitable for all cyclists, explicitly including less experienced cyclists and families. Both routes are therefore established as independent, clearly named options in the area: one follows a 6 km circular route, while the other is intended for cyclists with different levels of experience and explicitly includes families.

Surroundings

There are also named destinations outside Šmarjeta. Pleterje Monastery is located in the surroundings of Šmarjeta. Mount Trdinov Vrh is also located in the surrounding area. Mount Oklinak lies in the wider regional surroundings of Šmarjeta. The summit of Boršt is also located there, in the wider regional surroundings. Mount Ravnina likewise belongs to this wider regional area.
