Srednje Grčevje: Culture, Wine and Trails

Culture

The Srednje Grčevje – Cerkev sv. Jurija monument is listed as an individual monument under EŠD number 2477. This monument is subject to a building protection regime. The furnishings of St. George’s Church form part of the monument; any interventions require the consent of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. St. George’s Church is regarded as the oldest church in its parish.

The former Grčevje primary school is also part of the village’s historical heritage. It opened in 1946 and was housed in a zidanica, a traditional Slovenian wine house. Another connection between village life and horses is provided by the Sveti Jurij Grčevje Equestrian Club, which is based at Srednje Grčevje 14. One of the club’s aims is to organize a riding school.

Hiking and Cycling

The Trškogorska cycling route passes through Srednje Grčevje on its return journey. The route is intended for mountain bikes or trekking bikes. Alongside the cultural and historical heritage, this places a route specifically designed for these two types of bicycles within the village context.

The “S cvičkom med vinogradi” hike also passes through Srednje Grčevje, climbing through the vineyards to St. George’s Church. The traditional hike takes place every year on the last Saturday in January. Homemade food, Cviček and hot drinks are offered at the stations along the route. The route, date and refreshments all belong to the same named hiking event.

Wine

Grape varieties are cultivated on marl soils in nearby Grčevje. The characteristic Cviček results from the balanced combination of these grape varieties. The area’s connection with wine is also evident in individual zidanice: the Škatlar 3 zidanica, dating from 1848, has an authentic wine cellar.

The Hmeljniška zidanica, described as a wine estate, is classified as architectural heritage from the early modern period and has a partially underground wine cellar. It belonged to Hmeljnik Castle. Hram Pavlin is listed at the address Srednje Grčevje 106.
