Rossiya-matushka, the heart of Mother Russia
In the “Central Russia” section, we introduce cities, attractions and travel routes in one of the most important regions of the vast country of Russia. Russians themselves call Central Russia “Rossiya-matushka” (Mother Russia). Central Russia is the starting point of the great Russian empire. The roots of Russian culture lie here.
Rossiya-matushka—the heartland of the Russian nation
The region of Central Russia is officially called the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation. It comprises 18 administrative regions. Russians simply call the area “Rossiya-matushka”—Mother Russia. In fact, everything that makes Russia what it is comes from here; this is the historic heartland of the Russian nation. Central Russia is home to Moscow and several cities of the Golden Ring.
Ancient Russian settlements
Central Russia can be of great interest to tourists and business travelers. Most of the cities in this region are ancient Russian settlements, with centuries of history, their own traditions and distinctive architecture, as well as their own secrets and fascinating stories. For example, there is Ryazan, with a vast wealth of historic monuments, including numerous cathedrals and the Ryazan Kremlin itself; Ivanovo, an ancient Russian city famed for its weaving; and Smolensk, a city celebrated for Russia’s military glory. Between them lie the vast forests and plains of the European part of Russia.
Traveling through Central Russia gives you the chance to experience and get to know one of the world’s largest countries and life in Russian villages, visit many attractions also well known in the West, and enjoy the local scenery, whose images are featured in lavish books about Russia.
The European part of Russia
Central Russia is part of European Russia. Here, you can sense how close the Russian mentality is to that of the West. You can also begin to notice the differences—the first distinctions in mentality, which become more pronounced the farther east you travel into the vast expanses of the country. “Rossiya-matushka,” Mother Russia, is the gateway to Russia as a whole, both in body and mind.
Explore Central Russia in stages
Central Russia covers vast distances and encompasses very different landscapes. Moscow can serve as an urban base, while smaller cities, river regions and historic sites each warrant their own stop. If you plan to visit several destinations, consider not just the straight-line distance but also rail connections, transfers, daylight hours and the return journey. Staying in one base and taking a few excursions is often easier to manage than changing accommodation every day.
