Ukraine changed its customs laws

Ukraine changed its customs laws
Ukraine changed its customs laws

The first day of June will bring to Ukraine not only summer heat and long-awaited holiday season, but also new customs code. New customs code, designed to simplify movement of citizens through the Ukrainian border, will come into force on June 1. The new law will not only significantly reduce costs, as well as the number of customs officers, but also greatly simplify crossing of the Ukrainian border.

Under the new legislation, goods, which value does not exceed the equivalent of 1,000 Euros (excluding excise goods), can be transported tax-free through the border by air. In other border crossing points of Ukraine the cost of transporting luggage must not exceed 500 Euros and weight no more than 50 kg. These standards will be applied to all citizens crossing the Ukrainian border no more than once per day.

If the value or weight of the baggage exceeds the norms, or the frequency of visits is more than one time per day, 10% duty and VAT should be paid.

The list of goods exempted from import duties in Ukraine:

1. personal belongings;

2. cultural items (paintings, drawings, pastels, original engravings, prints and lithographs, original sculptures and statuettes from any material, stamps or seals, postage marks, postal stationery items (stamped paper) or similar items used or unused) zoological, botanical, mineralogical and anatomical collections and collectibles interesting for its historical, archaeological, paleontological, ethnographic or numismatic importance, antiques aged 100 years and more and items produced more than 50 years ago;

3. goods for everyday use and initial settlement, which are transported (sent) by citizens in connection with moving for permanent residence to Ukraine;

4. citizens’ goods transported through Ukraine by transit;

5. legacy items, inherited by the resident outside Ukraine;

6. goods received by the resident citizens as awards and prizes in international competitions and contests outside the customs territory of Ukraine;

7. goods (including personal vehicles), which had previously been transported by the resident citizens outside the customs territory of Ukraine and imported back, if such fact is legally confirmed;

8. personal vehicles, temporarily imported into the customs territory of Ukraine by non-residents, as well as fuel in the normal tanks of such vehicles as specified by the manufacturer;

9. goods (except vehicles), which were in use and intended for personal settlement and life support of citizens, who were abroad on business trips (or studied), if such goods are imported (sent) within six months from the date of return of such citizens to Ukraine after the end of business trips (studies).
