Tepelena District: Hotels and Accommodation

Tepelena District combines karst landscapes, rivers, and historic sites. Its notable natural features include the springs, caves, and other surface and underground karst formations of Tepelena, which are considered to be of particular interest for tourism and speleology.

Nature

Beçisht is located near Bashkia e Tepelenës. Maja e Trebeshinës, Mali i Leklit, Picar, and Tërshnicë are located in the surrounding area of Bashkia e Tepelenës. Kalaja e Borshit is situated in the wider regional area of Bashkia e Tepelenës.

The Nivica Canyons are designated as a natural monument for their geomorphological, hydrological, and aesthetic values. The canyons extend for approximately 8 kilometers and reach depths of around 200 meters in some places. The Vjosa River flows through Tepelena and forms part of the Wild Vjosa River National Park, declared in 2023. The protected river system of the Vjosa includes the tributaries Drino, Bënça, and Shushica and is connected to the Tepelena area.

The Vjosa area around Tepelena is associated with hiking, rafting, nature exploration, and ecotourism. The Peshtura Waterfall forms pools with crystal-clear water over karst rock, which are used for recreation and nature observation. The waters below the waterfall are described as suitable for diving.

Water

Uji i Ftohtë in Tepelena is a spring-fed recreational area with crystal-clear water and practical infrastructure. The site is easily accessible for picnics, day trips, and family visits.

Culture

Ali Pasha Tepelena Castle was built in the 17th century and served as an important defensive point. The castle offers panoramic views over Tepelena and the Vjosa River. In the historic center of Tepelenë lies Lord Byron Square, which commemorates Lord Byron’s visit to the town in 1809.

The Beçisht Bridge crosses the Vjosa below Tepelena Castle and preserves traces of a Roman construction phase dating to around the middle of the 1st century BC. The Dragot Bridge is a metal bridge over the Vjosa built in the 1930s, connecting Tepelena with southern areas, including Përmet and Gjirokastra. Ali Pasha's Mill is open to visitors and is located about one kilometer from Tepelena’s main square. There, visitors can see the traditional water-powered mechanism still in operation.

History

The Tepelena Camp Memorial Museum commemorates the Tepelena camp, which was established in former Italian barracks during the years 1949 to 1954. The Tepelena Historical Museum displays archaeological, historical, and ethnographic objects as well as documents from several historical periods, including the communist era.

Cuisine

Petaniku is considered part of Tepelena’s culinary heritage and represents handmade southern Albanian cuisine.
