Landscape and Water

Lake Koman was created in 1985 following the construction of the Koman Dam. Deep gorges characterize the lake; wooded mountains rising 1,000 to 1,200 metres above sea level surround Lake Koman. The area around the lake is also home to diverse flora and fauna. The landscape can therefore be understood through several clearly recognizable elements: the man-made lake, the deeply carved gorges, the wooded mountain ranges and the species-rich surroundings.

Culture and History

Varreza e Lashtë e Komanit is a Category I cultural monument in Koman. More than 150 graves have so far been excavated at the Old Cemetery of Koman. The cemetery dates from the 6th to the 9th century and is associated with the Koman culture, an early medieval Albanian culture of the 6th to the 8th century.

The archaeological site of Kalaja e Dalmacës is also located near Koman. It is of particular importance for the study of early medieval Albanian culture. Archaeological excavations there uncovered jewellery, weapons and other objects of material culture. The site also includes the ruins of churches. They attest to the presence of Christianity and the influence of Byzantine culture in the region during the early Middle Ages.

A boat tour on Lake Koman passes through the Molla Valley and includes stops for swimming, kayaking and a lunch break.
