Tirana combines historic sites, museums, markets, green spaces and contemporary cultural venues. The Castle of Tirana is located in the city’s historic centre. Today, only part of the former castle’s northeastern surrounding wall is visible. Within the castle, a pedestrian and recreational area promotes handicrafts, local traditions, as well as Tirana’s cuisine and art.

Culture

The National History Museum presents the history of Albania from antiquity to the present day. The thematic pavilions are dedicated to the Illyrian period, the Middle Ages, the National Renaissance, the antifascist liberation struggle and the communist period. They also contain important documents on the formation of the Albanian state. The exhibitions combine archaeological artefacts, historical documents, cultural objects and interpretive installations.

The Et’hem Bey Mosque was built at the end of the 18th century and completed at the beginning of the 19th century. It is known for its elegant Ottoman architecture and rare frescoes depicting natural landscapes, floral motifs and elements of Oriental architecture. The mosque is open to visitors. Construction of the Tirana Clock Tower began in 1822 and was completed with contributions from wealthy families in Tirana. Following alterations in 1928, the clock tower reached its present height of 35 metres and acquired four clock faces.

The Archaeological Museum of Tirana has collections on regional history from prehistory to antiquity. Its holdings include jewellery, mosaics, coins and other artefacts. A visit provides insights into early civilisations and the everyday life of people in antiquity.

City

The Pyramid of Tirana was built in 1988. Today, it is a contemporary cultural and technology centre focusing on innovation and educational programmes for young people. It attracts visitors interested in the city’s urban development and creative scene.

Skanderbeg Square was redesigned in its present form in 2017. Its green spaces offer an open and publicly accessible environment. The square is used for cultural events, national and international festivals, exhibitions and artistic activities.

The New Bazaar preserves the historic character of Tirana’s old market while also providing modern urban infrastructure. The covered market offers fresh regional produce, spices and traditional Albanian specialities. The area around the New Bazaar is a lively neighbourhood with cafés, restaurants, craft workshops and souvenir shops.

Nature

The Grand Park around the artificial lake is Tirana’s largest green space and provides room for recreation, outdoor activities and running. The public park in southern Tirana includes the artificial lake, the Church of Saint Procopius, several monuments and the mausoleum of the Albanian royal family. The Grand Park also contains more than 120 species of trees, shrubs and flowers and provides a habitat for numerous bird and animal species.

Memory and Stage

BUNK’ART 2 is a museum and historical installation in the centre of Tirana. Its focus is the communist dictatorship, surveillance and state control. BUNK’ART 2 is located in a nuclear-weapons-proof bunker built in the late 1980s. Documents, authentic objects, state security equipment and multimedia installations convey the realities of political persecution and life under isolation.

The interiors of the National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble are designed for opera performances, ballet, symphony concerts and other stage productions. The repertoire includes classical and contemporary works by international and Albanian authors.
