Vaqarr – Lakes, Pines and Traces of Antiquity

Vaqarr has been inhabited since antiquity, as evidenced by castles and other archaeological finds. Landscape and history are closely intertwined here: lakes, pine trees and surviving evidence from different periods are among the defining features of the area.

Nature

Fortuzaj Lake was created for irrigation in the 1970s and 1980s. The landscape around the lake is surrounded by green spaces and trees. Vaqarr also has a particularly dense and distinctive pine forest, which extends mainly across the villages of Lalm, Allgjatë, Prushaj and Gropë. Thus, both the artificial lake and the extensive pine forests are among the landscape features described for the area.

Prushi Lake is also an artificial lake surrounded by pine trees. There is lush vegetation around the lake. Visitors can go for walks or hikes at Prushi Lake. To reach the lake, follow the road from Tirana to Vaqarr and turn right towards the village of Prush before arriving in Vaqarr. Lalmi Castle can be reached from Prushi Lake via a path through the pine trees.

Culture

One of Vaqarr's historical points of interest is Lalmi Castle, also known as Bijit Castle. It is located on Pyramid Hill in Vaqarr and was built around the 4th century AD. The combination of the castle complex, hill and pine path gives the area's cultural traces a clearly identifiable spatial context without separating the individual sites from one another.

An ancient limestone gravestone with a funerary inscription for a freed slave woman was discovered in the village of Lalm. The upper section of a limestone stele from Allgjatë bears the epitaph of a slave woman who died at a young age in the 1st or 2nd century. The limestone stele from Allgjatë is kept in the Archaeological Museum. Thus, in Vaqarr, both a find from the village of Lalm and a preserved museum artifact from Allgjatë represent the area's archaeological heritage.

Cuisine

Fërgesa, also known as Tavë dheu, is considered a characteristic specialty of the Vaqarr area. The name refers to the same regional dish under two commonly used names.
